FVA-Guideline 551 IV - Rotary shaft seals | 2024

The FVA-Guideline ‘TESTING OF DIRT CONTAMINATED – Rotary shaft seals’ presents a concise summary of the current state of research on the surface properties of ground sealing counter surfaces of radial shaft seals. The guideline focuses on presenting methods for measuring, characterising and evaluating twist. The term ‘twist’ refers to all types of microscopic and macroscopic surface structures on the shaft surface that actively convey fluid during rotation of the shaft in sealing contact and can lead to failure of the sealing system.

The FVA guideline serves as a comprehensive guide to analysing the surface condition of a sealing mating surface, enabling companies to correctly assess sealing mating surfaces independently and in cooperation with suppliers and customers without having to rely on external expertise.

Scope
Seal mating surfaces for radial shaft seals in the field of mechanical engineering/drive technology in accordance with DIN 3760/3761, which are manufactured using the external cylindrical grinding process with plunge grinding.
